A book release party for Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland will take place on Tuesday, May 1st at the Big Dog Theater, 2781 Euclid Heights Blvd in Cleveland Heights. The event is co-sponsored by Mac’s Backs-Books on Coventry and Big Dog Theater.

Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland is both a history of the city and a valentine to Cleveland by one of the pioneers of the graphic novel. The book is illustrated by Joseph Remnant, a contributor to Smith Magazine’s online Pekar Project. It is published in a unique collaboration between Top Shelf and Zip Comics.

Harvey Pekar’s Cleveland covers familiar American Splendor-ous territory while weaving in chunks of Cleveland history, including the Indians winning the 1948 World Series, the notorious 1969 fire on the Cuyahoga River as well as profiles of Cleveland “characters” like Charles Ruthenberg, leader of the city’s Communist party whose ashes were buried in the Kremlin wall. And of course cameos by Pekarverse regulars like Mr.Boats, Toby and Harvey’s wife Joyce.

The event will include an informal panel with Harvey Pekar’s wife Joyce Brabner, illustrator Joseph Remnant, Josh Frankel, president of Zip Comics and the book's editor Jeff Newelt.

Harvey Pekar died in 2010. He created the American Splendor comicanalso wrote several graphic non-fiction narratives including The Beats and Students for a Democratic Society. He and his wife Joyce Brabner co-wrote Our Cancer Year. He was featured in the movie American Splendor (2003), an adaptation of his work.
