WEBSTER'S NEW WORLD COLLEGE DICTIONARY 5TH EDITION

Thursday, September 25, 2014 - 7:00pm to 8:30pm

Webster's New World College Dictionary 5th Edition will be published in August, 2014. It is the first new edition in 15 years and until recently was edited right here in Cleveland. Some of the editors that worked on this 5th edition will be at Mac's on Thursday, September 25th at 7 p.m. to talk about the process of working on one of the world's best dictionaries.

Webster's New World Dictonary is the official dictionary of The Associated Press Stylebook and hundreds of newsrooms across the United States. Thoroughly reviewed and revised, this new 5th edition includes nearly 5,000 new words and senses (hashtag, selfie) and features a brand new design. Since the 1930's this dictionary has been synonymous with rigourous research and clearly written accessible definitions.

Editors Louise E. Robbins, Andrew Sparks and Jennifer Wason will discuss the dictionary and answer any questions you may have.

Louise Robbins is Senior Editor in the reference group at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt which publishes Webster's New World and the American Heritage reference books. She has Ph.D in the history of science from University of Wisconsin/Madison and is a Cleveland Heights native now living in Boston.

Andrew Sparks left the United States Navy in 1956 and began working on the dictionary staff in Cleveland. He became Supervising Editor and trained much of the staff that worked on this book, which he believes is the best dictionary published in the United States. Andrew was part of a Great Books Group from 1958-2013 and was recently named Citizen of the Year in Olmstead Falls.

Jennifer Wellman Wason was an Assistant Editor for the dictionary for more than 11 years. She is a Kenyon College graduate and has a master's in library science from KSU. Jennifer lives in Cleveland Heights and works as a technical writer.
