David Beach, director of GreenCityBlueLake and Joel Wainwright, author of Climate Leviathan will speak about climate change at Mac's on Saturday, February 24th at 7 p.m.

The GreenCityBlueLake Institute is the sustainability center of The Cleveland Museum of Natural History. Since 1992, GreenCityBlueLake (and its predecessor organization, EcoCity Cleveland) has been a local leader in the fields of regional planning, watershed health, transportation alternatives, lakefront design, green building, and climate change. In addition to producing many influential publications, they originated or were a primary participant in numerous noteworthy initiatives, including the Citizens Bioregional Plan, Cleveland Environmental Center and climate change planning Northeast Ohio.

David Beach has been a leading voice for sustainability and the environment in Northeast Ohio for more than 25 years. He has been a founder of numerous organizations and projects, including EcoCity Cleveland, the Greater Ohio Policy Center, the City of Cleveland’s Office of Sustainability, and the Cleveland EcoVillage. His writing and activism have helped to shape major civic issues, such as regional land use planning, watershed planning, transportation priorities, and planning to address climate change. Recently, he coordinated the PNC SmartHome exhibit at The Cleveland Museum of Natural History, the first building in Ohio to meet the Passive House standard for energy performance. In the coming years, he is interested in helping people in Northeast Ohio think more deeply about what it will mean to create a society that will be truly healthy and sustainable in the long run. He lives in the Shaker Square neighborhood of Cleveland, where he enjoys being in a walkable, transit-rich environment. He is a graduate of Harvard University.

Joel Wainwright is co-author (with Geoff Mann) of Climate Leviathan: A Political Theory of Our Planetary Evolution (Verso 2018).  He is associate professor at The Ohio State University and is also the author of Geopiracy: Oaxaca, Militant Empiricism, and Geographical Thought Development (Palgrave Macmillan 2012).

Despite all the science and summits, leading capitalist states have not managed to mitigate anything close to an adequate level of carbon emissions. There is no way the world will warm less than the critical 2C threshold. What are the likely political-economic outcomes? Where is our warming world headed? Possibilities in the struggle for climate justice depend on our capacity to anticipate where the existing global order is likely to go. Climate Leviathan provides a radical way of thinking about how environmental change will intensify existing challenges to global order, unearthing the forces for a planetary variation on existing forms of sovereignty. Drawing on a wide range of political thought, Wainwright and Mann argue that rapid climate change will transform global political economy and our world’s basic political arrangements, leading toward a capitalist planetary sovereignty. Alternative futures must be constructed in the face of these transformations.
