Elaine Schleiffer, EF Schraeder & Mary Turzillo

Wednesday, February 8, 2023 - 7:30pm to 9:00pm

Poets Elaine Schleiffer, EF Schraeder, and Mary Turzillo will read at Mac's on Wednesday, February 8th at 7:30 p.m, followed by an open mic.

They will be reading from In Trouble, an anthology edited by Elaine and EF Schraeder.

About In Trouble:

Terrified, desperate, and rebellious—before 1973, those were routine reactions for anyone trapped and in trouble. Access to reproductive health care has been chipped away for decades until a single decision once again mired a new generation in historic trauma and modern repression. The voices of In Trouble explore the fantastic and ordinary ways lives are overturned by unplanned or unexpected arrivals. This collection aims forward, delivering stories of radical agency and fierce self-direction, challenging the world of legally imposed vulnerability, exploited futures, and oppressive structures that have become so painfully real. In Trouble is a vivid examination of power and self-determination.

The editors will donate 100% of net proceeds to benefit the National Network of Abortion Funds.

Elaine Schleiffer is a community organizer, writer, and advocate based in Cleveland, Ohio. She is the founding board chair of The Buckeye Flame, Ohio's only queer media outlet, and former board chair at Preterm. She is also the cofounder of REACH: Responding with Empathy, Access, and Community Healing, Cuyahoga County's grassroots coalition advocating for the expansion of behavioral health crisis services. An admirer of strange wonders and sleights of hand, E. F. Schraeder writes poetry and fiction often inspired by not quite real worlds. E.F. Schraeder is the author of Liar: Memoir of a Haunting (Omnium Gatherum, 2021), which was an Imadjinn Award finalist in 2022. Schraeder is also the author of a story collection and two poetry chapbooks. Awarded first place in Crystal Lake Publishing’s Poetry Contest (2021), Schraeder’s work has appeared in Strange Horizons, Mystery Weekly Magazine, The Feminist Wire, and other journals and anthologies.

Mary Turzillo's "Mars Is No Place for Children" won a 1999 Nebula, and her Lovers & Killers won the 2013 Elgin. Sweet Poison, with Marge Simon, was a Stoker finalist and Elgin winner.  Mary has been a British SF Association, Pushcart, Stoker, Dwarf Stars, and Rhysling finalist. Victims (Weasel Press), a recent poetry collection with Marge Simon and a Stoker finalist, features themes consonant with "Crawl Space." A cheerful story collection, Cosmic Cats & Fantastic Furballs  (WordFire) was published in 2022.  To release pent-up frustration at the state of women's rights, she competes internationally as a fencer. She lives in Ohio, with scientist-poet-fencer Geoffrey Landis.
