Mother/land is focused on the intersection of motherhood and immigration and its effects on a speaker’s relationship to place, others, and self. It investigates the mutual and compounding complications of these two shifts in identity while examining legacy, history, ancestry, land, home, and language.

“There is so much unbridled joy and pained tenderness in Ananda Lima’s poetry. [...] Lima sings of the thrills and terrors of her new life in America, the pleasures of motherhood, and what she inherited from her family. Her voice is singular and wise and fresh.” —Cathy Park Hong, author of Minor Feelings

Ananda Lima has also published the chapbooks Amblyopia (Bull City Press, 2020), Translation (Paper Nautilus, 2019), and Tropicália (Newfound, 2021). Her work has appeared in The American Poetry Review, Poets.org, Kenyon Review Online, Gulf Coast, and elsewhere. She has an MA in Linguistics from UCLA and an MFA in Creative Writing in Fiction from Rutgers University, Newark.

Meg Shevenock's debut poetry collection, The Miraculous, Sometimes, won the 2019 Marystina Santiestevan first book prize, judged by Bob Hicok for Conduit Books & Ephemera. Her poems and essays have appeared in Times Literary Supplement, Lana Turner, Best New Poets, Denver Quarterly, Ninth Letter, jubilat, and Kenyon Review blog. She is the 2020 recipient of the Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award in poetry, and is a “reader” for internationally acclaimed visual artist Ann Hamilton. Meg maintains an ongoing telepathic art collaboration with Brooklyn-based artist, Jamie Boyle.

“I am awed by the generosity of The Miraculous, Sometimes, which spans modes and moods and forms effortlessly, and with brilliant dexterity. All of it held up by precise and beautiful language and compelling narrative structure. This is a beautiful text, which leads a reader through its glorious forest of imagery and imagination.” —Hanif Abdurraqib
